Last November I shared some Soul Coughing releases here & here. 

 

Head honcho, obnoxious frontman, & stream-of-consciousness poet for Soul Coughing was one Mike Doughty. Love him or hate him, most all will agree that he creates / writes / plays some damn fine music. Recently he has been lending his skills to Ghost of Vroom. GoV has much more of the Soul Coughing vibe than Doughty's solo work, imho.

Doughty sez:
     "Scrap (Andrew Liningston) and I had been doing this thing where we were improvising during songs, using an adapted, simplified form of the game pieces I learned from John Zorn in the 1990s. Hand signals for changes in the music: starting and stopping individual players, simplifying and creating complication, changing the volume, dropping into chaos and suddenly switching back to order. And we loved doing it. It transformed us into a nimble, live-remixing machine. So we wanted to try a without-a-net version - some pieces started with grooves we'd worked out beforehand, some totally freeform. We did this weekly residency, every Friday for two months at Harvard and Stone, in Thai Town, Los Angeles, using people we'd worked with and players from around L.A. that we loved. It was absolutely thrilling, and mesmerizing for the audience to watch, and to hear. I guess this is what we want to do when we grow up."

Somewhere Someone Lost a Voice

 

Taking their name from a classic 1968 Penguin UK Sci-Fi paperback by Eric Frank Russell, Somewhere a Voice was a Ealing, UK post-punk band formed in 1980 that lasted only two years. They released only this one album, Love, Logic, & Ego. 

 

The band consisted of: Graeme Garlick - guitar & vocals; Hilary Dron - bass; Cyril Simsa - keyboards; & David Jones - drums (their original drummer quit before the album was recorded & Jones was brought in as a session musician). Also, for the album, the band added saxophone on three tracks (provided by the single-named Seva).

Their sound is both typical of the 1982-era UK DIY Factory style post-punk & atypical beacase of unique melodic bass playing of Hilary Dron that often follows the vocal lines & the counter melody Cyril Simsa achieved on his Roland keyboard synthesizer.

During the course of Trip-hop February, I decided two groups warranted deeper delving. 

They are Mudville & Swandive...

Mudville was one of my favotite post-Trip-hop outfits. Mudville is mainly Benny "Cha Cha" Rubin & Marilyn Carino. Before they formed Mudville, the two released an album of soul-jazz under Marilyn's name.

After Mudville called it a day, Marilyn went on to record several more solo outings. Her debut solo album is a startling meld of sonic & lyric contrasts. These nine songs, with their downbeat tempos, shimmering layered sometimes angular textures, & criss-crossing rhythmic / drenched-in-soul melodic architectures, swallow the listener whole.

Her follow-up was written, recorded, mixed, & performed solely by Carino except for the track  "War & Peace", written by Marilyn Carino with Mike Mills (R.E.M. bassist), This release is a collection of vocal / lyric driven soundscapes; head-space grooves formed from layered, Moogy synths & stark beats.

The album's title comes from a Frida Kahlo installation Carino saw, which featured monochrome rooms, for each of which a sign noted Kahlo's feeling about the various colors. Yellow was madness, blue was peace, & green was leaves, sadness, science. The ten tracks on the album echo the graphic, challenging, & charged paintings of Kahlo, who's work, "Moses (Nucleus of Creation)" graces the album's cover.

Swandive only released two albums during their short career. They then split up over "musical differences".  Lead singer Ann Kathrin Lüthi went on to a successful solo career using the stage name Annakin.

Her Roots Run Deep

 

Dominique Fils-Aimé is a JUNO Award winning singer-songwriter from Montreal whose music reflects the history of Afro-American musical culture, focusing on the social realities that have influenced the genres of blues, jazz, & soul. Notably she has released a trilogy of albums inspired by 40s - 60s soul icons such as Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, & Etta James.

Her debut full-length album, 2018s Nameless thematically centered on historical struggles of Afro-American silences & sorrows in the face of systemic racism.. This blues-tinged album bookcases Fils-Aimé original tunes between "Strange Fruit" & "Feeling Good", two classic blues tunes uniquely interpretted by Dominique's distinct vocals.

Feeling Brazillian...Grab a Fat Slab

While I was doing last month's tribute to Trip-hop, I listened to a bunch of Fila Brazillia when I was working on Steve Cobby's The Solid Doctor segment. Fila Brazillia is one of his two main outlets, the other being Heights of Abraham. 

 

In 1990, Cobby teamed up with David 'Man' McSherry to form Fila Brazillia, named after the mis-heard naming of an agressive breed of dog, the Fila Brasilliero (but with "a Z & two L"). Both artists are members of other bands or work regularly on other projects, but enjoyed getting together in a more casual environment where they simply played what was in their minds & on their fingertips at the moment.

I have a file full of Fila but for some reason never got around to sharing it with you all.

The Noise Goes On, Just Moves Slightly

This month I'm sharing his excellency, Archbishop Kebab. This was an avant-hardcore collective formed around 1986, actually from Edinburgh, but they were a part of the Glasgow noise scene, closely aligned with Dog Faced Hermans, Badgewearer, & Dawson, each of which I have shared previously in this series. Together for about 13 years, they produced five full-length releases during their span.

Scratching the Circle

The Orb should be well known to all. The group was riginally formed by Jimmy Cauty (of The KLF) & Alex Paterson in 1988 as a project to explore their fondness for ambient music, Dub, soundscapes, & science fiction. They became pioneers of the early-90s "ambient house" genre. Over the years Alex has been the only consistent member, whose other notables have included Thrash (Kim Weston) & Thomas Fehlmann. Closely associated with the Orb & at many times a guiding voice isYouth (a.k.a. Martin Glover). He co-owned the label WAU! Mr. Modo Recordings along with Alex. 

 

The Orb's electro-ambient house first meets Lee 'Scratch' Perry's ethereal, cosmic Dub in 2012s Orbserver in the Star House. This coming together of two disparate stylings works so well primarily because of the balance the Orb are able to strike between their own unique minimal house sound & adapting to accommodate Lee's Dub roots.

The Orb were prepared with a few base tracks & a bare-bones idea when they walked into the studio before meeting Lee for the first time back in 2004. But Perry had his own creative ideas.The Orbsters quickly found the limited number of tracks they had previously laid down to be insufficient to record all the ideas Lee inspired.

They proceeded to craft the rest of the record there in the studio in the truest form of collaboration. The Observer sits in the Star House & calls it out like he sees it,

This collaboration between The Orb & Lee 'Scratch' Perry take many twists & turns. The original release really works as Perry's unique voice melds perfectly with the tracks. It is not ambient Orb, but Dub Orb.

     "Nathan, what about..." & it's always a great suggestion about something I should have shared previously but simply forgot.

He was wondering if I might have a great 6xLP box set I am not Artist (1973-1988) by Smegma. Unfortunately I don't. Mostly sold out around the interweb, original label Vinyl-on-Demand lists it for 74,00 € plus shipping, which is a bit steep for this wee boy. 

 

I do have quite a few other Smegma titles however. I first shared Pigs for Lepers in June 2016 here & then Rumblings a few months later in August here. Decided I'd share one of my favorites. This is the 2007 reissue with eleven extra tracks from the studio side of the Morass cassette. Dedicated to the memory of Tom (Pig Champion) Roberts...

Loose Ends 3 - No Pressure

In the comments on the February 6 Cross My Heart Hope to Die post, long-time Frenz of NSS MarkyD sez:
     "have you got anything by Pressure Drop stashed away on a HD?".

Well, I explained to him then that I had Pressure Drop set to, well, drop as the kids say, in April. Loose Ends 2

On Leap Day I got the following comment from Anonymous:
     "Not knowing your policy regarding requests... Any chance you can post Kelli Ali's Tigermouth? This month was fantastic for me going back to trip-hop times. We must be the two only persons in the planet who know (and appreciate) Statik Sound System... lol."

First off, as per my policy (???) regarding requests...if you ask for it & I have it, I'll probably share it.

As for Statik Sound System, you'd probably be surprised how much attention they have garnerd. Trip-hop Feb. was the second time I've shared them. The last time was October 2023 when I was on a slight Tricky/Cup of Tea tangent, here. The interest that post generated helped influence me to share the second time. 

 

As for Kelli, have always loved her vocals. On a Sneeaker Pimps post I shared her pre-Pimps band The Lumieres' Cinder Heart as well as her second, Psychic Cat which I always thought was one of her better solo releases. I even shared the cover to Tigermouth on the Pimps post (that cover is just plain hot) & name-dropped it. Glad to share it here.

Taking Care of the Community

Before I plunge into March with both feet, I have a few loose ends from February to take care of first.

While I was posting up Trip-hop last month, I got a comment from Anonymous here.

Rebel Roots Reminder

 

This is just a general reminder to all, but especially those of you who follow along on this here dump & have expressed an interest in Dub & reggae music. Last September Reb started a private sharing site called Rebet Roots for those particularly interested in Dub/reggae music. It is members-only. Since its inception there are now more than 800 shares, many with multiple releases, over a thousand unique titles & growing. Everything is 320mp3 or FLAC, with the majority FLAC.

I joined & have downloaded many great Dub albums that, yes, even I didn't have! It has been fantastic. Since that time, several folks who frequent this mess have joined in on the fun. Reb let me know that there are still a few openings for members if anyone is interested.
