The Return of the (God)DubHead

By 2004 when Shake the Nation: A New Breed of Dub was released, Dubhead had already shot their load, IMO. They only pulled together 15 tracks as opposed to the 16 tracks they offered on the first three New Breed comps.

Most of their A-team Dubsters were MIA, having gone on to various other labels or projects: Nick Manasseh & Etherealites - Roots Garden; Ryan Moore (Twilight Circus) - Twilight Circus Dub Sound System; Centry, Music Family, Bush Chemists, Singer Blue, King General,  (all under the wing of the fantastic Dougie ‘Conscious’ Wardrop - East meets West, Hydroponics, The Dub Specialists) - Conscious Sound; Hi Tech Roots Dynamics (teamed with Martin Campbell) - Log On! & Channel One (UK); Mungos Hi-Fi - Scotch Bonnet; & Zion Train - Universal Egg.

These following Soundclash Sessions are from the more fertile 1999/2000 period with a healthy dose of the above mentioned artists. I’ll feature some of the individual acts in the next post. Since I’ve already touched on some of the sweet sounds of Conscious Sound, Roots Garden, & Twilight Circus, I’ll try to offer some less well known but equally righteous musick. But for now, my final Dudhead compilation.

36 Chambers Nike Dunk High

I have two more releases from Dubhead (Soundclash Series 1 & 2) & all the Dububerflow from those postings (All Nation Rockers, The Love Grocer, Etherealites & three more), but this just happened to come up.

Guess that pungent aroma is Morcheeba wafting on the breeze. Aid00 over at Welcome to Wherever You Are blog just posted several Morcheeba items.

A few years back, I posted up Morcheeba’s Part of the Process. That posting got a big response (even two heads-up from Brotherhood of Dub OGs Ib & Jonder, both non-triphoppers) & one commenter hinted at more...well...cheeba as well as a request for Sneaker Pimps Becoming X. Sneaker Pimps are in my top ten trip-hop bands, but I felt at the time that Becoming was quite readily available elsewhere & so declined to follow up on the request. I briefly considered posting up Becoming RemiXed, but decided it was also around the interweb, so...

The other day I was reading an article about the Beastie Boys & their X-Large & sneaker love. The article used the term "sneaker pimp" to describe some nameless individual the Boys paid to dig for old-skool deadstock tennies. This leads full-circle back to Sneaker Pimps. According to Chris Corner (guitar, synthesizer, vocals), the band  took their name from said article.

Becoming X was SP's most popular release, due in large to the vocal stylings of Kelli Dayton. After the Becoming X tour, there was a parting of the ways between the boys (Corner, Howe, Pikering et. al) & Kelli. Splinter followed in 1999 & Bloodsport in 2001. Bloodsport has many of my favorite tracks, including the hyper-great "Loretta Young Silks".

Here is the album version of that song from Bloodsport, a trio of acoustic versions of other SP tunes, & the previously unreleased "Miami Counting".

When SP were putting the finishing touches on Becoming X, they were still in search of a female vocalist. In a bar in Birmingham, they heard the band The Lumieres, a proto-pixie-punk group.
Kelli Dayton was the singer, songwriter, & guitar player. They talked her into working with them & Becoming X was the result.

Here is an ultra-rare three-track seven inch single from The Lumieres.

Kelli Dayton has been using her father's last name Ali for her solo releases since leaving the Pimps. Here is her second solo release (I wanted to post this but couldn’t resist the super hot cover from Tigermouth above).

Back to the Sneaker Pimps.

Here is the SP4 demos from 2004. This was originally given to a record label, only to be refused thus making it unreleased. It's initial name was Recall, but was altered to SP4. This rejected fourth album was released on the Sneaker Pimps website, back when it was functioning.

Many of the songs on this album were reworked for the first two IAMX albums. Chris Corner was becoming X, now he is...I AM X he declares. Taken from Kiss & Swallow / The Alternative, IAMX's first two releases, the I am X versions of SP4 tunes (plus two bonus tracks).

Back in 2005/2006, a music player was found in a Russian bar, it contained seven tracks which were suspected to be from the Sneaker Pimps. The tracks circulated the web for years with uncertainty, but several years ago, Liam Howe (keyboards) confirmed that they are indeed SP tunes. Howe referred to them as The Magnificent Seven. The vocalist on the tracks remains unknown. Here is the mp3 rip of the album.

For all you lurkers & leechers, if you're not much into the Brotherhood of Dub, this'll probably be a good time for a toilet break or a short nap. I'm bringing this years girls to fruition, so I have Dub blasting full-time. The young ladies can't  hear but they sure can feel the drums & bass so I give them a continuous diet of Dubwise. If it's good enough for them, then it's damn well good enough for this here juke joint.

In the Ol’ Family Tradition

One of our neighbors found three abandoned new-born kittens (about two weeks old) in the crawlspace under his porch. Black Dahli opened her humongous heart & volunteered us to foster one of the little suckers. So now we're bottle feeding Dusty Crusty Punk (we determined he was a small black male after we removed dust-balls bigger than he from his filthy coat - the name just appeared). This is a round the clock task for BD, Lao Elanya, & moi, so I haven't had any time for this here web-log. That said, here's the Dub I'm Dubbin' at the Casa Nada at the present.

This here is the 1980 re-release of the 1977 smash hit Tradition in Dub. Only the names had been changed to bend your mind a bit. Trillin’!

Tradition here are: Les McNeil - vocals; Chris "Buff Head" Henry - guitar; Paul "Echo" Thompson - keyboards & vocals; Paul Dawkins - bass; & Tony "Drummie" Matthews - drums.

Recorded at Gooseberry Sound Studio. Produced by David Tyrone

Dread Pon Some, Jah Love Pon Bim

Bim Sherman (born Jarret Lloyd Vincent - February 2, 1950 in Westmoreland, Jamaica) was a musician & singer-songwriter hailed as "reggae's sweetest voice". Bim was gifted with a haunting, ethereal voice that reached into the very heart of his listeners.

Bim Sherman did not ascribe his love of music to any one person but rather to his family, with whom he would attend church services & Sunday school. But as he became older, he began going to the local dancehalls:

"I always knew I could make the music, ever since I was small and it was all I wanted to do. I remember growing up and listening to it, singing along with it and feeling the power of it, which is the other side of roots, and feeling light-headed"

In the early seventies the young Sherman swapped trades from fisherman to electrician when he moved in with one of his brothers in central Kingston. His closest musical friends were Keith Porter & Ronnie Davis, who would go on to form the respected vocal group the Itals, but his first recording experience was with his early mentor Gladstone 'Gladdy' Anderson at the famous Treasure Isle studios. Things did not work out as well as he hoped there, or as Bim once so eloquently put it:

"things just go boof!"

In 1975 his first single to be released was "100 Year" b/w "100 Year version" which was cut at the Federal studio with Sid Bucknor as the engineer, produced by one Jarrett Tomlinson (aka Bim Sherman) & released on Micron Music Limited. "Love Forever" followed the same year, a self-financed affair on the Elements label with the Soul Syndicate band. Then came a string of tunes now recognized as reggae roots classics on Sherman's own Scorpio, Red Sea, & Sun Dew imprints ("Valley of Tears", "Tribulation", "Golden Locks", "World Go Round" & many others). These singles met with a degree of local success & appreciation which convinced Bim to continue, but in Jamaica there was always too much pressure:

"Lots of people like Randy's or Joe Gibbs want to record me, and even producers before them like Coxsone (Dodd). But its not easy in JA to get what you want out of recording and those people have a range of tricks they use to oppress you..."

Bim's first full-length album Love Forever (billed as Bim Shierman) was released on the Tribes  Man Records label, produced by Bim & Jah Lloyd, & included the title tune plus nine other previous Jamaican singles. Jah Lloyd was Lloyd Blackford, who was born in Morant Bay, Jamaica & had moved to the UK in 1961 to start Sir Coxsone Outernational, an extremely successful UK Sound System named after Jamaica's Coxsone Dodd.

Like so many other young Jamaicans in the 70s (& with encouragement from Jah Lloyd), Sherman decided to try his luck in the UK after the end of 1979s Roots Encounter tour (where he performed alongside Prince Far I, Creation Rebel, & Prince Hammer).

He moved to London where he started a friendship & business relationship with the young maverick music producer Adrian Sherwood, a long-time admirer of the singer.

Regarding Bim Sherman, Adrian Sherwood sez:

"All great singers and vocalists have one thing in common - their voice stands out like a uniquely tuned instrument that only one person can play. Bim Sherman was a singer/songwriter with a truly golden tone.  I have been throughout his whole career a huge fan. I first heard one of Bim's songs while working in PAMA records Soundville Shop in Harlesden, London, in the mid 70s ... His was like a voice from the wilderness, the lyrics and fragile power ensured that in every subsequent batch of imports I was looking out for a new Sherman record. I wasn't disappointed."

Adrian went on to buy all of the 7" pre-releases which featured the voice of Bim Sherman. It was during this time that Sherwood was developing his business collaboration with the heavyweight Jamaican DJ Prince Far I. He encouraged Prince Far I to hook up with Sherman for recording purposes. Eventually tunes such as "Down in Jamdown" (HIT DD 12) with Jah Lion & "Love Jah Only" (HIT DD II) with Jah Buzz came into the UK on the Hitrun label, a partnership venture between the young English producer Sherwood & the veteran Jamaican toaster Far I.

As part of the post-punk reggae infatuation, Bim made a name for himself recording on Sherwood's On-U Sound label. He became part of various musical collectives associated with On-U Sound, such as New Age Steppers (teamed with Ari Up, formerly of The Slits), Gary Clail & Tackhead, Singers & Players (with Congo Ashanti Roy & Prince Far-I ), Akabu, Japan's Audio Active, Sabres of Paradise, Groove Corporation, Bomb the Bass, Dub Syndicate, & Justice League of Zion.

In September 2000, Bim was diagnosed with cancer & succumbed to it on November 17, 2000 in London. His voice, song-writing, & impeccable class will never be duplicated but can be easily appreciated through his bountiful output.

Here's an early one I've always loved. Hope you do to...

This has been a winding way. I was listening to a heavy streak of Fats Comet. I thought I remembered some song Fats Comet had done, a different more cut-up version of what became "Heaven on Earth" on Keith LeBlanc's Major Malfunction album. It turned out to be "Be My Powerstation" which had been released as a 12" single in 1983 by St. Che & later on the 1989 full-length release Narcotic by Che.

Che turned out to be Alex Johnson aka Alix Plain. Alix was a founding member of Modern Eon, a new wavish post-punk band that was part of the "New Liverpool Scene" that sprang up in 1979-1980 around Eric's Club (in a basement opposite The Cavern Club of Beatles fame). Others belonging to the "New Liverpool Scene" included Echo & the Bunnymen, The Teardrop Explodes, Orchestral Manoeuvers in the Dark, Dead or Alive, Pink Military & others.

Modern Eon had a few compilation tracks & then a minor hit with "Euthenics". In June 1981 they released their only album, Fiction Tales. The songs are fueled by powerful tom-tom driven, inventive drumming provided by the band's new drummer, 17 yr. old Cliff Hewitt. Their music differs from their musical peers by occasionally adding odd analog electronics & saxophone while Alix's vocals are bathed in reverb & delivered with a smooth eloquence yet are barely intelligible. The music is moody & melodic but a certain harshness bursts through that always leaves a vaguely mysterious impression.

Following the release of Fiction Tales, a tour was arranged supporting The Stranglers. But, during rehearsal sessions Cliff Hewitt, whose drumming style had become such an integral part of the bands sound, seriously injured his wrist. He did contribute to scheduled appearances for the John Peel, Richard Skinner, & In Concert Radio One radio shows, but it soon became apparent that the rigors of a tour would be too much for him. A suitable replacement could not easily be found. The solution was that they toured with Cliff's drum tracks on a tape machine which Cliff operated.

The end of 1981 found Modern Eon at work on demos for a second album with Cliff back on his drum stool but sadly, Modern Eon faded away, never to release a follow up album.

Both the single "Be My..." & Narcotic are a druggy mixture of dubby funk & big beats that came about as the result of Alix meeting Adrian Sherwood (who produces three songs - "Fireflies", "Imperfections", & "Be My Powerstation") & Tackhead (former Sugarhill Gang legends Doug Wimbish, Skip McDonald, & Keith LeBlanc who provide all the music).
