Yesterday found Jon Hassell teaming up with Mandalay. Today he's hooked up with Bluescreen to try his hand at the ole Trippitty-hoppity hisself. So, OK, it's not really Trip-hop but if Hassell tried it & wants to call it that, whatever...it's close enough for rock 'n' roll.

Jon Hassell was an American trumpet player & composer best known for developing the concept of "Fourth World" music. According to Hassell, "Fourth World" is a "unified primitive/futurist sound" combining various world ethnic music with modern electronics. The concept first appeared on Hassell's 1980 collaboration with Brian Eno, Fourth World, Vol. 1: Possible Musics.

Bluescreen was a loose collective of musicians made up of keyboard player Pete Scaturro, drummer Bryan Mantia, guitarist Joe Gore, & DJ/sampler/programmer BLK Lion.

On Dressing for Pleasure, Trevor Dunn, Islam Shabazz, Flea & Buckethead provide bass on various tracks.

The Portishead / Mandalay - Pearl story:

In 2003 I bought a disc called Portishead - Pearl on the Always Records label (a Russia, Ukraine, & Eastern European imprint) that stated it was copyrighted by Go! Beat, Portishead's label.

But Portishead never released an album called Pearl. It turned out to be Mandalay, the Empathy album, an infamous bootleg. The album was actually a rip-off of Mandalay's Empathy album, expertly repackaged & credited to Portishead. Even the production & songwriting credits are attributed to Geoff Barrow / Beth Gibbons. The tracks were simply in a different order & the Mandalay song ''Opposites'' was renamed ''Pearl''. The rest of the song titles were identical.

Thank goodness for the Interweb & the likes of Discogs these days. Other than being a total rip-off of both bands, it is certainly high praise for Mandalay.

Mandalay was formed in the 1995 by multi-instrumentalist / programmer Saul Freeman & vocalist Nicola Hitchcock. Their debut album Empathy featured appearances by former Japan / Rain Tree Crow member Steve Jansen, double bassist Danny Thompson, & trumpet player Jon Hassell.

Here's a duo whose overall skill-set is nipping at the heels of the great Bristol bands like Portishead or Massive Attack. They have a near perfect Trip-hop sound augmented by the inclusion of various other styles that they have melded into an amalgam of authenticity. To my ears, much of that credit goes to Marilyn Carino's top-shelf vocal skills. She is up in the higher echelon with the likes of Beth Gibbons or Skye Edwards.

Mudville is a Brooklyn, NY based band & artist collective whose sound, a hybrid of downtempo, electronica, Memphis-style soul/jazz has been dubbed "post-Trip hop". Core members Marilyn Carino & Ben (Benny Cha Cha) Rubin have added to the sound by incorporating classic Hip-hop stylings & elements of improvisational free jazz. They have also tightened up the songcraft by adding influences of Marvin Gaye & Duke Ellington to the minimalist, pop-based structures & lyrics, creating a potent fusion of jazz & space-rock

Mudville is the vision of bassist/producer Rubin & vocalist/songwriter Carino. They started out in San Francisco as a more straightforward rock band that prominently featured Hammond B3 organ.

Upon relocating to New York in 2000, Carino & Rubin began collaborating on songs with Carino writing lyrics/melodies & Rubin producing tracks using a combination of painstakingly arranged live instruments alongside digital sampling. Carino is known for her sultry contralto voice, expressive phrasing, & poetic, progressive-minded prose.

Benny Cha Cha has been a bassist for numerous jazz or rock greats, including Ronnie Cuber, Bill Frisell, Jim Campilongo, Moby, & Marshall Crenshaw. He has also worked as a remix artist working with the Wu-Tang Clan's Killah Priest, Karsh Kale, & Brazilian Girls.

To paraphrase the last stanza of Casey at the Bat by Ernest Thayer...
"Oh, somewhere in this favoured land the sun is shining bright,
      The band is playing somewhere, & somewhere hearts are light;
& somewhere men are laughing, & somewhere children shout,
Here're two releases from Mudvile---you oughta check'em out."

Philadelphia Bluntz was a cheap cigar, bought at a West London shop, coming in different flavors: chocolate; strawberry;  banana;  peachy keen; & many others, tasting best when packed with primo weed, of course

On one of those musical meetings that fueled our times, keyboardist, guitarist, bassist, & producer William South hooks up with Kent native Rennie Pilgrem, son of a jazz trumpeter, Geoff Pilgrem. Rennie was house techno beats wizard for Rhythm Section along with Ellis Dee, Richard Thake, & Nick 'Newton' Scott.

Rhythm Section played at pretty much every Soho party between 1990 - 1992 on the same bill as The Prodigy, Moby, Altern 8, Shades of Rhythm, & Bizzare Inc. Rennie's live band The TCR (Thursay Club Recordings) Allstars featured M.C. Chickaboo, William South, Richard Thair (Red Snapper), & Chris Carter. They played at many festivals in the UK & Europe.

About their first drop, Blunted at Birth, William South sez:
"This album was recorded over two sweaty weeks in partnership with Rennie in a sweaty basement in Soho in the summer of '94. It came out to little initial fanfare or investment around the same time Heavy Shift were making waves but actually garnered rave reviews that led to a major deal with EMI & a second album....which sold about 10 copies!....but for me this one was the hot ticket....Rennie and me were really pushing some sort of envelope & I think it ages well!”

Philadelphia Bluntz is: Rennie Pilgrem - beats, keyboards, FX, engineering & William South - keyboards, guitar, bass, melodica, occasional vocals along with guest vocalists Ashley Molloy South, JC001, & Tania Evans.

So fire up a coupla bluntz & lean back...

Sharus Interruptus - Here We Go Again

Sorry to interrupt the Trip-hop flow once more. I don't want to harsh anyones trip but I need to bring up some frightening-to-me news. For the second time in two days I have received comments from visitors to this dump letting me know that the decryption codes for two separate shares were missing from the comments.

One was the recent Lead with the Bass & the other was Dubtember 30 singles. Both of these shares have had regular visitation & I know that until now the codes were there. I don't know if their disappearance is simply the result of interweb gremlins or whether it is a more insidious move on the part of Blogger.

If anyone comes across similar instances, please let me know A.S.A.P. Since over the 15+ years I have been doing this I have files scattered all around the cloud & it would be a fiasco of gargantuan proportions for me to try & recover & replace those codes, even if I somehow hoped they would stay re-installed.

Starting with the next share, the link will be to a text file with instructions for retrieving the download. Sorry about this. If the problem does not persist & proves to be random, I will go back to how things were.

Just wanting to let my Frenz & other visitors whassup!

In 2000, Argentinian musician & producer Diego Guiñazu was looking for a strong female vocalist to form a Trip-hop duo. Bristol UK Trip-hop had filled his head & showed him the way. After more than a year searching, a friend put him in contact with Natalie Naveira. The two worked well together, formed the duo Any Day Now & by 2002 were playing local events & radio shows.

On an annoying Monday in 2003 they discovered there was another group named  Any Day Now & that they needed to change their name. They decided it was apropos to change their name to Lêndi Vexer, a phoenetic variation on the French Lundi Vexer (annoying Monday).

They self-released this four (really five) track EP in 2004.

Although Trip-hop came about as a British amalgam of UK Sound System, rave culture, Dub, & hip- hop, although the name was almost universally despied by the original Brit progenitors, the rest of the world was hugely receptive to the style & not the least wary of the label.

In Austria, Mona Moore, Andy Orel, & Richard Dorfmeister formed the group Sin to create their take on Trip-hop. By 1993, Dortmeister had left Sin & joined up with Peter Kruder. They began releasing Kruder & Dortmeister records for Vienna's Spray Records.

One of the producers at Spray was Klaus Waldeck, who released his own brand of Trip-hop under the name Waldeck. Waldeck's work was similar to K & D's style, though many of his productions reflect the recruitment of various vocalists, similar to Massive Attack.

After contributing a track to the Spray compilation The Eclectic Sound of Vienna, Waldeck released his debut full-length Balance of the Force in 1998.

We Interrupt Your Regularly Scheduled Programming to Bring You This Breaking News

One of the blogs that I regularly visit is C90Lounge: Changing the World one mixtape at a time. Although I am more album oriented, anyone familiar with this dump knows that I make my fair share of compilations. Mid-October Mr. Sprayon Pants, the host of said blog, announced an End of the Year Mixtape Contest. I missed the announcement but was hipped to the event by Frenz of NSS & fellow blogger Jonder.

Today Mr Sprayon announced the winners. Frenz Jonder was tied for runner-up. You can find his & his co-winner’s entries in links at End of Year Playlist Winners Are

The reason that I interrupted this Trip-hop program was to announced that I was declared winner, much to my astonishment. Regulars here know that I usually try to please my own musickal yearnings first & foremost, only hoping that a few others might catch my drift, as they say. That was the mind-set I had going in to the whole thing. I compiled a set of 2023 new music that I found appealing to my tastes & figured that would be as good as it got. I was personally happy with the results but was quite sceptical as to what anyone else would think. Well, the panel of judges got it. They even sez in their critique: "Fresh and for us, completely new songs that seem to be thinly inspired by the music of C90 but perhaps almost co-incidentally so." That was exactly what I intended & was hugely chuffed that the point came across.

If you want to check out some new music & listen to my mix, just follow the link above & give it a listen. Hope you enjoy.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program already in progress...

Sitting on the cusp between the originators of Trip-hop & the new vision is never an easy proposition. Vanessa Daou's music touched on Trip-hop, nu-jazz, & electronic with her trademark spoken word & aspirated singing style accompanying erotic literary lyrical subtexts.

Vanessa Dale Daou was born in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. She moved to New York City's Hell's Kitchen area where she eventually attended Columbia University where she studied dance & visual arts. She became involved with poetry through Kenneth Koch, who sparked her interest in spoken word. Daou ultimately graduated cum laude with a visual arts & art history degree from Barnard College. She frequently performed at Postcrypt Coffeehouse, the university's on-campus poetry lounge.

At the same time, Vanessa began her recording career with NuGroove Records, one of New York's underground electronica labels. Her demo caught the attention of two NuGroove DJs . They had her record vocals for a track they were developing. The union led to the label's top-selling single "It Could Not Happen".

See what you think of her attempt at bridging a chasmic gap between origin & revival.

Previously on this backwater blog I've gush about the greatness of & fawned at the feet of the Bristol Trip-hop originators. This month I intend to share other artists or outfits that heeded the call of the Tripping hop & created their own versions.

So...

At the opposite end of the musical spectrum from the original experimental hip-hop of the likes of DJ Shadow & a continent away (or as she sez: "Half a World Away") is another Englishman from Stratford, this being one Jenny-Bea Christina Englishman from Stratford, Ontario, Canada, a singer-songwriter more popularly known as Esthero. Esthero's style is characteristically her voice over a mix of mellow bass lines, jazzy trumpets, Spanish guitar, & hip-hop. A perfect combination for that ole Trip-hop thang.

Fab, You Weary? 1

As Daddy G sez about Trip-hop: "Dance music for the head, rather than the feet."

I've never shied away from the fact that I'm a Trip-hopper.

Viacomclosedmedown on youtube sez:
"Nathan Nothin' - former show promoter, Bill Nelson fanatic as all we are, who once saw the MC5, with the best Trip Hop related & revB old school music well of info."

Got me thinking about my relationship with Trip-hop. I have always partaken of live music. I love to shake my tailfeathers. I cut a plenty good rug for a white guy. I do have rhythm. Since the early days of hip-hop I was enraptured by the beats & sampling / programming elements. I was just never enpaptured by the "rap" parts. So when I first encountered Trip-hop in the mid-90s, I knew they were on to something big, something important. I started buying everything I could find & ended up with quite a shitload.

That & a spate of recent requests for "more Tip-hop, please" made me decide to dedicate February to the Music that Could have Saved the World.

Sinuous & mysterious as a plume of drifting smoke, a new sort of groove wafted three decades ago from Bristol, a bohemian university town in the west of England. Though its prime movers, Massive Attack, Tricky, Portishead, Smith & Mighty, all loathe the term coined in June 1994 by Andy Pemberton in a feature for Mixmag, the word "Trip-hop" has become synonymous with the style created by those Bristol artists. The sensuous grooves fulfilled a timeless human need for a bass-heavy sound to touch the secret recesses of our imagination & lure our dreamworld onto the dance floor. Trip-hop was tailor-made for the moment when a rebel wants to get tender.

The fundamental trip-hop tempo is slow, slow but relentless, presided over by immense bass figures, as deep but less booming than those of house music. There are lots of rhythm drop-outs, as in Dub, lots of inserted snippets of instruments or noises proliferate wildly in the cleverest mixes. The tone of many Trip-hop numbers is sleepy, jaded, but the lyrics, primarily sung in a smolder by women being loved softly, usually spring from the raw wounds of social or romantic anguish.

Bristol thrived as a slave port for hundreds of years: in the modern era it's one of Britain's blackest cities, culturally & socially. It's long been home to a West Indian community. Shebeens & Sound Systems were a way of life for all music-loving Bristolian youth. Being a port, Bristol was always awash in cannabis & hashish. There is no lack of locally-grown life-enhancers like scrumpy cider & hallucinogenic mushrooms. Great fuel for Bristol's music scene.

Over the years since its birth, Trip-hop has been re-imagined as chill-out, downtempo, illbient, & lounge music. The initial movement grew, exploded, & waned. In the early 2000s a 2nd wave of Trip-hop emerged, grew, exploded, & waned. The second wave tried to recreate the original sound as closely as the times allowed. By the late 00s & early 10s the process repeated itself once again. This time the sound was augmented by 21st Century studio technology. During the month I will try to touch on all the various phases of Trip-hop, though I am partial to the original sound, but I have shared it extensively here in the past, so the second wave of Trip-hop will undoubtedly be the most shared.

Many varied artists have dabbled in Trip-hop: Lana Del Rey's Born to Die; FKA Twigs' EP2; Madonna's Justify My Love; Gorillaz; Björk: Nine Inch Nails; Beth Orton; The Flaming Lips; The Deftones; all have succumbed to the sense of opiated mystery that is Trip-hop.  Even jazz greats like Jon Hassell has made forays into Trip-hop (Jon Hassell & Bluescreen - Dressing for Pleasure 1994 will pop up sometime this month).

But what of the true birth of Trip-hop. Let's go back to June 1994 & Andy Pemberton's coinng of the much-loathed genre label. He sez it in reference to the single "In/Flux b/w Hindsight" that came out on the soon to be Trip-hop influential label Mo' Wax out of London,UK run by James Lavelle of UNKLE.

"In/Flux" was the brain-child of one Joshua Paul Davis aka DJ Shadow along with the Groove Robbers. Perhaps my love of Trip-hop somewhat stems from the fact that I knew J. when I was living in San Jose & doing EAT POOP! 'zine. Josh was born in San Jose & went to college at UCDavis where he DJed for the campus radio station KDVS. He created his own DJ-ready music merging elements of hip-hop with funk, rock, jazz, ambient, soul, & many other styles he found in the used-bin records of the many Bay-area record shops we both heavily frequented. His music was in the same vein as the experimental hip-hop style associated with the London-based Mo' Wax record label.

Mo' Wax's James Lavelle became aware of Shadow through his first Soulsides release, the Entropy 12". Lavelle contacted Shadow in 1993 about releasing "In/Flux" on the fledgling imprint. So although Trip-hop is thought of as an originally British genre, DJ Shadow's work with Mo' Wax ("In/Flux","Lost & Found", & much much more) & with DJ Krush led to many stellar breakthroughs in the genre (Shadow added his genius to the Lavelle / Tim Goldsworthy mix of the Massive Attack song "Karmacoma").

Here is the "In/Flux" single...

But the release of DJ Shadow's debut album Endtroducing in 1996 was a monumental moment in music. Endtroducing is the first album created entirely from samples. DJ Shadow made the whole thing using only an AKAI MPC60 12-bit sampling drum machine, dual turntables, & an early version of Pro Tools borrowed from Dan "The Automator" Nakamura. The gatefold cover is at Rare Records in Sacramento with Tom Shimura - Asia (later Lyrics) Born in wig; Xavier Mosley - Chief Xcel with vinyl stack; & Beni B in basebal cap along with Rare Records cat.

Why, oh Rhye

Last month in Musick that Needs Work - M, I fixed up Milosh - iii. Milosh for a while (2012 - 2017) teamed up with Robin Hannibal under the moniker Rhye. They initially released their music (singles "Open" & "The Fall") independently & mysteriously on the internet only.

Interest in their sound led to more main-stream exposure. There was great interest as well as speculation amongst music journalists & reviewers about the group's identity, which they never fully revealed. The thing that threw most opinions askew was Milosh's high & sigh androgynous contralto vocals. His voice & Rhye's over-all sound has been likened to Sade or The xx.

Here we will explore Rhye's earlier works...
