Sayonara Syria
Anonymous has declared cyber war against the embattled Syrian government just one day after the country sparked outrage by shutting down its citizens’ Internet access. As Network World reports, Anonymous has vowed to attack “all Web assets belonging to the Assad regime that are NOT hosted in Syria” in retaliation for the country’s suppression of its citizens’ digital communications. Anonymous said that the Syrian government’s actions were particularly rash because it had “physically severed the fiber-optic & coaxial cables coming into Syria” which is “not damage that can be easily or quickly repaired.” The hacker collective said its first target will be a website belonging to Syria’s embassy in China.
Anonymous is attacking Assad in response to the Internet shutdown. Anonymous is *not* attacking Assad in support of the Free Syrian Army.

Today, at precisely 10:30 AM ET all Internet traffic into & out of Syria ceased. Within a half hour of this sudden shut down, the PBX land-lines were degraded by 90% & Mobile connectivity was degraded by 75%. The nation of Syria has gone dark. & Anonymous knows all to well what happens in the dark places.
Anonymous has done an exhaustive analysis of the Internet shut-down in Syria & we have concluded that the Syrian regime has physically severed the fiber-optic & coaxial cables coming into Syria. Although Hostess is blaming the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers & Grain Millers International Union (the BCTGM) for their demise, here is the truth:
Hostess first entered bankruptcy in 2004 after a failed restructuring attempt. During this first bankruptcy, which lasted 4.5 years, BCTGM local unions & members at Hostess (then IBC) agreed to significant wage & benefit concessions that brought Hostess wage rates below national competitors.
Beginning in 2003, Hostess began closing production plants, thrift stores & consolidating driver sales units, resulting in major loss of employment for the unionized workforce. Before this first Hostess bankruptcy, the BCTGM represented more than 10,000 Hostess workers. That number is now approximately 5,00 due to plant closings.
Reports suggest Hostess saved $110 million because of concessions its unionized workforce took. The money was NOT reinvested in the business.
In 2009, Hostess Brands emerged from bankruptcy as a private company controlled by a private equity firm (Ripplewood Holdings...shades of Bain???) & two hedge funds (Silver Point Capital & Monarch Alternative Capital...Romney economic policy in real-time practice). The new ownership promised to focus on brand building, modernize its plants & trucks, & invest in new technology that other baking companies were employing. Instead, aging trucks & plant machinery were not replaced. New technology was ignored. The company's debt continued to grow & its sales continued to decrease.
In 2011, the company was floundering & again demanded major concessions from unionized members.
Workers refused additional givebacks. Hostess filed for bankruptcy for the second time in January 2012.
In bankruptcy court, Hostess retained one of the top law firms in the nation (Jones Day...guess they can afford that) at ludicrously high hourly rates & attacked its union contracts. Hostes demanded:

Urine-toxicated again
Wednesday before last, stogref from France asked me to re-upload this split 7". I couldn't find a copy of it saved on my back-up drive, so I had to go searching through my records. Anyone who has been around here for a few years knows how bad I am at filing stuff away. Plus I moved this past March & haven't even unpacked all my records. Well, I finally dug this sucker out of its grave & re-ripped it. The whole thing is now in one .rar with cover art & record side art included. This sound really good. Bosnian Rainbows
Went to see the Omar Rodríguez-López Group last night at Harlow's. I knew there was no certainty as to what would touch my ears from this genius of myriad musickal tastes other than that it would be fantastic. I was privileged to be entertained by the phenomenal Bosnian Rainbows: Omar on guitar & backing vocals; keyboardist Nicci Kasper of Dark Angels; drummer Deantoni Parks of Dark Angels, The Mars Volta, & other renditions of ORLG; fronted by vocalist Teri Suarez of Le Butcherettes. You can read elsewhere around the interweb what others have to say about BR, but I lack the words to properly exclaim their excellence. Just listen to the clip above & as usual...

Au Go Go is a French expression meaning 'in abundance, or galore', derived from the ancient French la gogue which means 'happiness or joy'.
Go Go dancing blew up in the early 60s.
In 1964, Carol Doda, the "Perfect 36", began go go dancing at the Condor Club in North Beach, San Francisco, CA. Shortly thereafter, go go dancers were hired in places as far reaching as New York, Tokyo, Paris, Los Angeles, Berlin...
When London was Swinging, there were clubs like the Whiskey-a-go-go on Wardour Street, a bar which was known for their 'go-go' dancers, energetic if not erotic dancers to amuse the lively clientele. It was named after the original disco in Los Angeles which opened in 1963. Discotheque a go gos popped up all over the world, especially after Bill Haley & the Comets released their album Bill Haley-a-Go-Go.

The $230,000,000 Man
Just got done watching another debate. What a waste of time. Everyone keeps saying that Romney's numbers just don't add up.

If the growth of economy could somehow keep up with the growth of population, then it might be slightly feasible that in order for the wealthy to become more wealthy that no one else would need become poorer. Since that will never happen, then in order for the wealthy to become wealthier, many of us must lose what little we have.
In an era of such economic tragedy the likes of which very few living today have ever experienced worse, what doesn't really add up to me is electing the richest candidate ever to run for President. His interests are not our interests. He only wants to add to his pile. If the wealthy have more, they're not going to pass it on to us. They're going to buy more luxury cars, more yachts, more countries, more prostitutes... whatever they spend it on now, only more.
Romney is full of Mitt. Everything he says is Mitt. The 230 Million Dollar Man.

Fuck GaGa, this is the real Lady
Man, oh man. I'm finally getting settled in to my new digs, thinking about gettin' back to this bloggin' shite, & my trusty ole (& by ole, I mean ancient, PC crashes, thrashes, gasps, & dies). I'm trying to fix that problem & get back on the interweb.
Anonymous left a comment over at Live Lady Day letting me know that Billie's rare live recording has been pilfered by the Blog Police. So even amidst all my connectivity hassles, I must remedy this terrible situation. No one has the right to deprive anyone of the glorious Lady Day.
That is now remedied over at the original post.

Well, it has finally come to pass. Our landlord has finally tired of me paying the rent willy-nilly, with rolls of change & recycling chits, whatever coin of the realm I could lay my hands on, whenever. I lost my job some time back through a misunderstanding between myself, a billboard sign, & the local constabulary. Since then I’ve been living at the Casa Nada on a wing & a prayer, but, boy are my arms tired & nobody's answering up above anymore. Found a new hovel on charmingly named Whippoorwill Lane, so posts for the next few fortnights will be more sporadic than usual.
Thought this old nugget from 1980 would stand good with how I feel, plus, come on...Angelic Upstarts??? "Never 'ad Nothin' "??? "Capital (& Capitol in my case) City"??? "We Gotta Get Out of this Place"??? How more apropos?

Sukiyaki, not Reinhardt

Just got done watching Takashi Miike’s Sukiyaki Western Django. I don’t really do movie revus but this flick is the tits. Miike is my favorite Japanese director (Dead or Alive trilogy, Ichi the Killer, 13 Samurai to name but a few).
We’ve got some crazy cross-culturalism going on here that is fantastic. Sergio Corbucci's violent 1966 classic Django was one of the highlights of the Spaghetti Western genre. He & fellow Sergio (that Leone one) skewered both Westerns & Akira Kurosawa to create memorable Italian westerns. Miike takes those Spaghetti classics & re-invents them in his own inimitable way. This results in a movie of unbridled violence, humor & weirdness. The mix of different cultures: Japanese; American; Italian; creates a heady blend. The film seems to be set in the American West, in the Japanese named town of Yuda in the state of Nevada (sign written in Japanese). Yet the architecture of the town itself is unmistakeably Japanese, reminiscent of the town in Kurosawa’s Yojimbo. The inhabitants are all clearly Japanese, but they speak American, though with very noticeable Japanese accents. At times the line delivery of some characters posits the question whether the actors really spoke American or if they merely memorized their lines. As I watched, I decided this flick was set in some kind of bizarro alternate universe.
All these things combine to make the suspension of reality a simple matter & adds to the over-all enjoyment immensely.
To quote The Mighty Peking Man:
"Sukiyaki Western Django is a great film. If you’re a fan of both Asian and Italian Westerns, it’s a must...It’s not a remake, it’s not a wannabe, it’s not a rip-off, it’s just a great director having fun while making a cool fucking movie."

I’ve got my night stump tied with a Noctourniquet.
I’ve been called many things in my lifetime, but no one has ever accused me of being a prog-dog. I’ve listened to my share over the years...I think Amon Düül is one of the all-time great collectives in musick. But anyone familiar with this Nothin’ that I spew forth here is well aware that I’m totally queer for The Mars Volta.
As everyone who probably cares probably knows, The Mars Volta has a new release coming out March 27th called Noctourniquet. It is the only thing I’m listening to right now. Especially through good headphones...shit, the channel seperation will blow yer mind. I dug up some of the liquid 1394 I had buried in the backyard & oh what a trip it was. There is much here in common with MV’s debut De-Loused in the Comatorium, but it's tied to the tail of a blazing comet that is the monstrous drumming from Deantoni Parks.

I’ve got my night stump tied with a Noctourniquet.
I’ve been called many things in my lifetime, but no one has ever accused me of being a prog-dog. I’ve listened to my share over the years...I think Amon Düül is one of the all-time great collectives in musick. But anyone familiar with this Nothin’ that I spew forth here is well aware that I’m totally queer for The Mars Volta.
As everyone who probably cares probably knows, The Mars Volta has a new release coming out March 27th called Noctourniquet. It is the only thing I’m listening to right now. Especially through good headphones...shit, the channel seperation will blow yer mind. I dug up some of the liquid 1394 I had buried in the backyard & oh what a trip it was. There is much here in common with MV’s debut De-Loused in the Comatorium, but it's tied to the tail of a blazing comet that is the monstrous drumming from Deantoni Parks.

Dewey the Freak

Dewey used to work as a freak in a sideshow at the Carnival.
When Dewey was still a young lad he got all bent out of shape. He started wearing his heart on his sleeve. He had a crush on a cheerleader, but she crushed him instead. She gave him the cold shoulder. Since then he’s had ice water in his veins.
He’d taken to saying that beauty was only skin deep, but he could really get under your skin. He’s such a bare bones kinda guy.
He got a job in the sideshow when the Carnies noticed he was pig-headed & two faced. He was a bald faced liar having a bad hair day. He had a big mouth but he was armed to the teeth. He was always biting off more than he could chew. He often spoke with a forked tongue, but he was always getting tongue-tied, except when the cat got his tongue. He was incredibly thick headed. He had mud in his eye & egg on his face. He used to keep his nose to the grindstone, but the pain was unbearable so he cut off his nose to spite his face. His eyes are bigger than his stomach.
Ever since the cheerleader fiasco, Dewey had butterflies in his stomach. His stomach was tied in knots. He was busting a gut. He had a bug up his butt. He had an ace in the hole. He was ass backwards & had ants in his pants.
His left hand didn't know what his right hand was doing. That’s why all the time he’d be getting caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Then he’d offer to give you a hand but he’d be all thumbs.
After that, the Carnies gave him an earful. Dewey was all ears. Even with a frog in his throat, his mouth was writing checks his body couldn’t cash.
When he lost his job at the Carnival, he really had his back against the wall. He didn’t have a leg to stand on & he was getting cold feet. Even though he had two left feet he felt like he was getting off on the wrong foot. He tried to tell his brother Hewey, they were joined at the hip, but he put his foot in his mouth. He felt like he had one foot on a banana peel & the other in the grave.
His brother split. He said Dewey had changed. He had a stick up his ass nowadays.
All of Dewey’s friends will tell you...he’s a real freak. He’s a walking cliche.

Veil of Thorns
Seems like I’m always listening to Veil of Thorns’ Necrofuturist. All VOT output is fantastic, but Necro just touches that special inner place.
VOT is the musickal brainchild of P. Emerson Williams, originally from the Boston, Mass. area & now residing in sunny Gotha, Fla. with an ever revolving cast of players, noisemakers, & voices.
I decided to dole out to the uninitiated the very first VOT recording. This has been released in a drastically different form in the not too distant past, but here is the original 1991 debut 4-track demo from Veil of Thorns, recorded on primitive equipment in a basement rehearsal complex in Boston. Instrumental tracks were recorded all at once on two tracks using two ribbon mikes & a direct line for Ruddy Bitch’s drums, leaving the other two tracks for vocals & a couple additional guitars. The sound of other bands sharing the rehearsal space can be heard at quiet moments. Originally on cassette.
The lineup here is: P. Emerson Williams - guitar & vocals; Jarrett Laitinen - guitar; Catherine Chenoweth - bass; & Ruddy Bitch - drums.

Justice Department Charges Leaders of Megaupload with Widespread Online Copyright Infringement
WASHINGTON – Seven individuals and two corporations have been charged in the United States with running an international organized criminal enterprise allegedly responsible for massive worldwide online piracy of numerous types of copyrighted works, through Megaupload.com and other related sites, generating more than $175 million in criminal proceeds and causing more than half a billion dollars in harm to copyright owners, the U.S. Justice Department and FBI announced today.
This action is among the largest criminal copyright cases ever brought by the United States and directly targets the misuse of a public content storage and distribution site to commit and facilitate intellectual property crime.
The individuals and two corporations – Megaupload Limited and Vestor Limited – were indicted by a grand jury in the Eastern District of Virginia on Jan. 5, 2012, and charged with engaging in a racketeering conspiracy, conspiring to commit copyright infringement, conspiring to commit money laundering and two substantive counts of criminal copyright infringement. The individuals each face a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison on the charge of conspiracy to commit racketeering, five years in prison on the charge of conspiracy to commit copyright infringement, 20 years in prison on the charge of conspiracy to commit money laundering and five years in prison on each of the substantive charges of criminal copyright infringement.
The indictment alleges that the criminal enterprise is led by Kim Dotcom, aka Kim Schmitz and Kim Tim Jim Vestor, 37, a resident of both Hong Kong and New Zealand. Dotcom founded Megaupload Limited and is the director and sole shareholder of Vestor Limited, which has been used to hold his ownership interests in the Mega-affiliated sites.
In addition, the following alleged members of the Mega conspiracy were charged in the indictment:
Finn Batato, 38, a citizen and resident of Germany, who is the chief marketing officer;
Julius Bencko, 35, a citizen and resident of Slovakia, who is the graphic designer;
Sven Echternach, 39, a citizen and resident of Germany, who is the head of business development;
Mathias Ortmann, 40, a citizen of Germany and resident of both Germany and Hong Kong, who is the chief technical officer, co-founder and director;
Andrus Nomm, 32, a citizen of Estonia and resident of both Turkey and Estonia, who is a software programmer and head of the development software division;
Bram van der Kolk, aka Bramos, 29, a Dutch citizen and resident of both the Netherlands and New Zealand, who oversees programming and the underlying network structure for the Mega conspiracy websites.
Dotcom, Batato, Ortmann and van der Kolk were arrested today in Auckland, New Zealand, by New Zealand authorities, who executed provisional arrest warrants requested by the United States. Bencko, Echternach and Nomm remain at large. Today, law enforcement also executed more than 20 search warrants in the United States and eight countries, seized approximately $50 million in assets and targeted sites where Megaupload has servers in Ashburn, Va., Washington, D.C., the Netherlands and Canada. In addition, the U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Va., ordered the seizure of 18 domain names associated with the alleged Mega conspiracy.
According to the indictment, for more than five years the conspiracy has operated websites that unlawfully reproduce and distribute infringing copies of copyrighted works, including movies – often before their theatrical release – music, television programs, electronic books, and business and entertainment software on a massive scale. The conspirators' content hosting site, Megaupload.com, is advertised as having more than one billion visits to the site, more than 150 million registered users, 50 million daily visitors and accounting for four percent of the total traffic on the Internet. The estimated harm caused by the conspiracy's criminal conduct to copyright holders is well in excess of $500 million. The conspirators allegedly earned more than $175 million in illegal profits through advertising revenue and selling premium memberships.
The indictment states that the conspirators conducted their illegal operation using a business model expressly designed to promote uploading of the most popular copyrighted works for many millions of users to download. The indictment alleges that the site was structured to discourage the vast majority of its users from using Megaupload for long-term or personal storage by automatically deleting content that was not regularly downloaded. The conspirators further allegedly offered a rewards program that would provide users with financial incentives to upload popular content and drive web traffic to the site, often through user-generated websites known as linking sites. The conspirators allegedly paid users whom they specifically knew uploaded infringing content and publicized their links to users throughout the world.
In addition, by actively supporting the use of third-party linking sites to publicize infringing content, the conspirators did not need to publicize such content on the Megaupload site. Instead, the indictment alleges that the conspirators manipulated the perception of content available on their servers by not providing a public search function on the Megaupload site and by not including popular infringing content on the publicly available lists of top content downloaded by its users.
As alleged in the indictment, the conspirators failed to terminate accounts of users with known copyright infringement, selectively complied with their obligations to remove copyrighted materials from their servers and deliberately misrepresented to copyright holders that they had removed infringing content. For example, when notified by a rights holder that a file contained infringing content, the indictment alleges that the conspirators would disable only a single link to the file, deliberately and deceptively leaving the infringing content in place to make it seamlessly available to millions of users to access through any one of the many duplicate links available for that file.
The indictment charges the defendants with conspiring to launder money by paying users through the sites' uploader reward program and paying companies to host the infringing content.

Crystal Blues blowin' across the Sahara

Tinariwen formed in 1982 but remained underground (Mali & Algeria both banned their political lyrics) until the group moved to the Malian capitol of Bamako in 1999. There the ten members drew on a rebel rock sensibility, openly playing their passionate, trance-like Desert Blues.
Born in a region plagued by exile, war, & drought, Tinariwen (originally Taghreft Tinariwen, or ‘edification of the lands’) became known for vocalizing the political plight of endangered nomads.
They were no strangers to armed conflict: Kheddou is said to have received 17 bullet wounds after leading several raids, armed only with a guitar on his back & a Kalashnikov in his hands... once he was doused in gasoline, owing his life only to his good karma & a faulty lighter; Ibrahim joined a training camp in southern Lybia after witnessing his father’s murder at the hands of Malian soldiers. At the camp, Ghadaffi made false promises of helping the Tamashek cause. In between classes about revolution, Islamism, & guerrilla warfare, Ibrahim honed his chops on guitar.
Tinariwen’s music speaks of & to the Tuareg or Kel Tamashek people, appealing for a political awakening of consciousness. For many years the nomadic tribes of the southern Sahara had tried to maintain hope in the midst of ethnic cleansing & public executions. These mighty musicians are the modern warriors of their people, with guitars replacing AK-47s. The songs of Tinariwen are petitions for political & cultural self-determination. They have become a point of identity for Tuareg youth. In a land void of laptops & TVs, cheap cassette recordings spread the music of bands like Tinariwen: the new Tamashek weapon of choice.

I’ve always been a closet trip-hopper. Beth Gibbon’s voice with Portishead never fails to touch that special spot, but all these years & only 3!
I’ve always appreciated the similarity Siobhan de Maré & Gibbon’s voices share...enjoying Siobhan's short stint with Mono.
Shortly after her time with Mono, she was contacted by Robin Guthrie, former guitarist for the Cocteau Twins. After the Cocteau Twins were laid to rest, Elizabeth Fraser joined up with Massive Attack on Mezzanine, & Robin, along with fellow Cocteau band mate Simon Raymonde were busy running their Bella Union musick label. With a respectable roster under his belt, Guthrie continued adding his trademark touch to numerous collaborations such as Bunnyman's Ian McCullogh & longtime NSS fave Wolfgang Press. Despite all of this, Robin still wanted to perform, so when he learned that de Maré was available, he contacted her .
Violet Indiana is the musical union of the two. Together they create a sound not far removed from Portishead, but capitalizing on de Maré's despondency & replacing much of Portishead's synthesizer with Guthrie's fluid guitar.
Casino is Violet Indiana’s second release. The first being 2001s Roulette. Casino is more a collection of the bands singles than an actual follow-up to Roulette. It is a great place to begin one’s vacation in Indiana.

I’ve always been a closet trip-hopper. Beth Gibbon’s voice with Portishead never fails to touch that special spot, but all these years & only 3!I’ve always appreciated the similarity Siobhan de Maré & Gibbon’s voices share...enjoying Siobhan's short stint with Mono.
Shortly after her time with Mono, she was contacted by Robin Guthrie, former guitarist for the Cocteau Twins. After the Cocteau Twins were laid to rest, Elizabeth Fraser joined up with Massive Attack on Mezzanine, & Robin, along with fellow Cocteau band mate Simon Raymonde were busy running their Bella Union musick label. With a respectable roster under his belt, Guthrie continued adding his trademark touch to numerous collaborations such as Bunnyman's Ian McCullogh & longtime NSS fave Wolfgang Press. Despite all of this, Robin still wanted to perform, so when he learned that de Maré was available, he contacted her .
Violet Indiana is the musical union of the two. Together they create a sound not far removed from Portishead, but capitalizing on de Maré's despondency & replacing much of Portishead's synthesizer with Guthrie's fluid guitar.
Casino is Violet Indiana’s second release. The first being 2001s Roulette. Casino is more a collection of the bands singles than an actual follow-up to Roulette. It is a great place to begin one’s vacation in Indiana.
