Man, am I confused? No…Yes…I don’t know anymore. I’m here in Bulgaria. When they nod their heads up & down (yes), they mean ‘NO’ & when they nod their heads side to side (no), they mean ‘YES’. This confusion has (has not) affected my musical judgement. All this music isn’t (really is) very good. Don’t (do) enjoy. Nevermind (no…yes…).

Ogonek (Valerie Sholevski) of Sofia, Bulgaria has become known in the Bulgarian drum & bass scene as Ogonek since 2000 although he started his electronic projects as far back as 1997. He helped in the creation of the label Porno BPM with artist Kei, Sub & KiNK (one of the label artists Josh Wink - Ovum).

After a meeting in 2001 with Ivan Shopov (COOH, BALKANSKY), the iconic duo OGONEK & COOH was formed, exploring both artists common attraction to the experimental & the heavy sound of electronic music. The two created five garage bootleg albums between 2001 to 2003.

In 2004 Valerie becomes part of HMSU - the biggest drum & bass movement in Bulgaria.

In 2008 together with dj Mad Twist, Sholevski created Metafiziq Recordings, a label now well recognized in the international drum & bass scene, featuring such artists as Dub Elements, Venganza, Erre (Spain), Gancher & Ruin, CVI (Russia), Digital Soul, Kigami (Bulgaria), Nico Sica (France), Block Dodger (UK), Kaiza (Germany), YMB (Netherlands), Fragz (Portugal), Joanna Syze, & Emoshin (USA).

In 2010, Valeri, in conjunction with Bassline Agency (USA), organized one of the biggest international events of the heavy drum & bass scene, the Therapy Sessions Sofia.

COOH (Ivan Shopov) first started in music playing bass guitar in a hardcore-metal band when he was 16. At age 18 he got involved with creating electronic music, producing drum & bass releases for the past 12 years. Now at the age of 29, he has more than 60 vinyl & more than 20 CD releases.

Together with Valery Sholevski (Ogonek), in 2001 he began intense promotion of drum & bass music within the borders of Bulgaria, sending out a "patriotic" message to the young generation, playing a lot in the busiest clubs in Sofia, mainly with the H.M.S.U. crew. As time passed by, his style gradually changed & solidified into its current hard dark drum & bass sound.

It is an eclectic mix of jazz, electronica, lounge & pop tunes. “Drop of Whisper” is one of my favorite tracks, reminiscent of Lebanese Blonde era Thievery Corporation. This is some great chill-out, if you dig that stuff. I’m really partial to it, being a narco-anarchist, so…

Ah, the Children ov the Night. The Carpathian Mountains. Transylvania. Romani. You know this slab o' tunes is gonna be diff-er-ent.

In November of 1996, the Romanian Gypsy singer Romika Puchanu (Romica Puceanu) died in Bucharest as the result of an automobile accident. Greatly admired by those who knew her singing, she nonetheless never received the acclaim which she deserved. Romanian state policy in effect during most of the years during which Romica was in her prime, made it difficult for most artists, particularly Gypsies, to be heard abroad. By the 1960s & 70s she had the unrivaled interpreter of the lăutărească (cintec de pahar), a form of urban Romanian Gypsy song that combines elements of Turkish & Romanian musick in a unique Romani blend. She possessed an exquisite voice & was a singer of great sensitivity, great depth.

Within the country, Gypsy singers in particular & other musicians in general who chose to perform Romanian Gypsy music were never officially accorded the same recognition, recording opportunities, or promotion given to those who performed only the approved music of the state.

Horațiu Rădulescu was born in Bucharest, where he studied the violin privately with Nina Alexandrescu, a pupil of George Enescu. He later studied composition at the Bucharest Academy of Music, where his teachers included Stefan Niculescu, Tiberiu Olah & Aurel Stroë, some of the leading figures of the newly emerging Romanian avant garde movement.

One of the first works Rădulescu completed was Credo for Nine Cellos, the first work to employ his 'spectral techniques'. He describes the technique…It "comprises variable distribution of the spectral energy, synthesis of the global sound sources, micro- & macro-form as sound-process, four simultaneous layers of perception & of speed, with spectral scordaturae, i.e. rows of unequal intervals corresponding to harmonic scales"

He continued to develop these techniques considerably in his music of subsequent decades. In the early 1970s he attended classes given by John Cage, GyörgyLigeti, Karlheinz Stockhausen, & Iannis Xenakis at the Darmstadt Summer Courses. Many of Rădulescu's other later works make use of folk melodies from his native Romania which he integrated into his avant-garde spectral techniques.

Beginning in the early 1970s Rădulescu's works began to be performed at the leading contemporary music festivals.

He died on September 25, 2008.

Moldova

Re-uploaded by request 3/6/2023

The story of both these bands from Moldova is interwoven. I’ll try to make sense here but you know me…

First Куйбул (Cuibul – The Nest) was formed in Chisinau in 1991 by Игорь Дынга (Igor Dinga). That year Dinga returned from the Soviet army. He did his military service in Moscow. At that time Perestroika was in full swing. Rock music was coming out from the underground & getting big throughout USSR. Besides political & cultural freedoms, Perestroika brought about societal economic chaos, poverty & despair. This is the context into which Cuibul started.

All the members of Cuibil were 22 or 23. Music & the musical revolution became their lifestyle. They weren’t sure where they were headed musically, but they knew they wanted to play. Their first songs were influenced by The Cure, INXS & Midnight Oil. Then the band members experimented with different styles, starting with swing. Their second album Lomaite vetki, lomaite palki in 1994 came out on the wave of grunge rock. The third album Icar in 1995 was mainly influenced by Mike Patton & the band Mr. Bungle. After Icar, two wind instruments were added to the band.

Although Cuibil’s music was steps ahead of many rock bands of that time, because of their experimentation with various styles & their refusal to be pigeon-holed, success evaded them. Igor decided to move to Moscow, but the band members didn’t take this step, each of them having their own plans, so the band broke up.

In 2000 Dinga restarted Cuibul, but it was a different band, with a new line-up & a different musical formula. Keyboards, female backing vocals, & electronic drums came into play. In 2001 the band releases a new album, Kliuchi ot vannoi, which went unnoticed by the critics & was misunderstood by former fans of the group. By August 2002 Cuibul was again put on ice after a final concert in Chisinau. At this time Dinga totally dedicated himself to the management of the band Zdob si Zdub, who he has produced since 1994.

Zdob si Zdub is the other band featured here, which I’ll get to in a moment.

Back to the Cuibil story. In 2008, Igor Coselean, the saxophonist from the first Cuibul” line-up, returned from The Netherlands. That same year the drummer Vadim Tichisan returned from Bucharest. This fact was a great opportunity to reunite Cuibul in its classic line-up: Igor Dinga – guitar & vocals; Andrei Boico – bass; Vadim Tichisan- drums; & Igor Cosolean who switched from saxophone in favor of the guitar.

In 2008 the band was rehearsing & once again experimenting with a new sound. In 2009 the band recorded 13 new songs which afterwards were released as this album, called ПРиЗ (Priz or Prize). Since the release of Priz, a video for the song “Prosheai i zdravstvui” has been airing on various TV channels & websites. Then a second video was filmed, for the track “Ruchka usilka”. The video, shot in Moscow by the director Yurii Vlasov, became a hit on Internet. It is in rotation on TV channels in Ukraine & Moldova.

Cuibul started 2010 with a series of concerts in Chisinau. On June 5 “Soyuz Music” label released the album Priz in Russia. The release concerts were held in Moscow & Saint Petersburg. At the end of 2010 the album was also released in Ukraine, on the Hitlab/Moon Records. 2011 year saw the band touring through Western Europe, where they participated at the EuroSonic festival that took place in Groningen (The Netherlands).

Recently the band was joined by the saxophonist Dimitrii Sergheev to fill in the spot vacated by Cosolean, Evghenii Berdea became the new drummer, & Lidia Scarlat was added as a second vocalist.

Здоб ши Здуб (zdɔp ʃi zdʊp or Zdob si Zdub) is a Moldovan band formed in Chişinău in 1994. The group's initial sound was rather hardcore. Their lyrics were mostly in Russian. They played at 10 Years After Chernobyl Action in Chişinău & warmed up for Rage Against the Machine at the Learn to Swim II Festival in 1996.

Around 1998, their sound began to change, embracing traditional Romanian music & lyrics entirely in Romanian combined with elements of hip-hop (especially sampling), hardcore punk & comical lyrics. Their stage shows are quite theatrical.

Ukraine

Alright kiddies. Huddle around the fireplace while Uncle Nathan tells you all a story. A story about a time long, long ago, when blind beggars travelled the countryside of the Ukraine, singing for their supper & hyping up the Cossacks to righteous battle wrath. Look out, there’s a Steppenwolf hiding in the darkened forest lair.

 kobza

Kobzars or kobzari are wandering folk bards who performed a large repertoire of epic-historical, religious, & folk songs while playing a kobza or bandura. Kobzars first emerged in Kyivan-Rus. They were popular by the 15th century. Some like the famed Churylo & Tarashko performed at Polish royal courts. They lived at the Zaporozhian Sich & were esteemed by the kozaks, whom they frequently accompanied on various campaigns against the Turks, Tatars, & Poles. The epic songs they performed, called duma, served to raise the moral of the Kozak army in times of war. .

 bandura

As the Hetman state declined, so did the fortunes of the kobzars. They gradually joined the ranks of mendicants, playing & begging for alms at rural marketplaces. In the late 18th century the occupation of kobzar became almost the exclusive realm of the blind or crippled. These handicapped musician-beggars organized Kobzar Brotherhoods to protect their personal livelihood. They organized themselves into singers’ guilds which imposed apprenticeship terms (generally three years), assigned territories, & spoke their own secret language (lebiyska mova).

In Ukraine, in the late 19th century, these blind singers, these kobzari, still made the rounds of the country fairs & markets. They accompanied themselves on the bandura, a unique stringed instrument combining elements of Central Asian lutes & medieval Kyivan lap harps. They were professional singers performing a repertoire of epic songs that did not have equivalents in the folk song repertoire. There were several cycles of dumy, most dealing with the bloody struggle for the Black Sea steppe between Cossack, Turk & Tartar in the 16th & 17th centuries; laments for fallen heroes, songs about Turkish captivity, a few songs about later Cossack rebellions against Polish rule. As these events receded into the past, new dumy were created that reflected the realities of day to day life. A kobzar’s repertoire also included religious & moralistic songs, lively humorous songs, & instrumental dance tunes (from the Black Sea Winds booklet).

The blind, wandering kobzari often had “guides” to lead them, mostly homeless or parentless children. The old kobzari were to these urchins father, mother, & teacher all rolled into one. The boys were the kobzar’s eyes. When they walked into a village, the villagers, hearing of the kobzar’s arrival on the grapevine, would flock to hear them recite their dumy & play the bandura. When the kobzar played lively instrumental tunes, the young people would break into a dance. On Sunday, after the church service, the kobzari sang religious songs, or recited psalms.

Ukrainian lyre

There was a sort of a kobzari school in Zaporizhian Sich (the very heart of the Cossack land) that trained ’students’ not only in playing musical instruments, singing & reciting but also in the martial arts, foreign languages:Turkish; Polish; & Russian being the most important “majors”, medicine (that is, use of herbs, charms & spells). The “graduates” were believed to be able to prevent bullets from hitting the targets by spells, to knock the saber out of the enemy’s hand with a glance, to draw a winged horse on the wall of a prison cell & fly away, sitting on its back, miraculously passing through the metal bars. They were protagonists of many stories & legends; their portraits could be found in many peasant houses alongside the icons. The pictures of Kozak Mamay, wearing the traditional Cossack garb, handlebar moustache, a long lock of hair on the otherwise shaved head, smoking his pipe & holding the bandura, were painted by folk artists in untold number of copies.

Kobzari knew how to almost literally entrance their audiences with their recitals & music so that the events they were singing about acquired the palpability of experience being lived through. Their forceful presentation of moral & patriotic issues made them dangerous in the eyes of the occupiers & enemies. Attempts were made either “to tame” them & make them sing “loyal tunes,” or to liquidate them.

Kobzari had survived the harshest of times of the millennia only to succumb to the total oppression of the Soviet regime. There is some evidence that suggests that in the 1930s, the remaining kobzari were invited to come to Kharkiv for “a congress”; they were all, blind & helpless, arrested, then thrown into a pit outside of town; water was poured over them & they all froze to death in a subzero temperature. The rest died in the famine of 1932–1933. Even their instruments were either destroyed or they disappeared without a trace. A few that remain & that are claimed to be “authentic instruments” of old, are the subject of heated arguments about which of them is “more authentic” or older.

 gusli

Bandura playing & kobzari singing were kept alive though by a number of enthusiasts both in Ukraine & beyond its borders, in the communities of people of Ukrainian descent living in foreign countries. But there are no wandering blind kobzari any more.

At the time when there is a definitely growing interest observed in many countries of the world in music of old times, Celtic is one good example out of many. Medieval & traditional folk music festivals attract large audiences; CDs with recordings of such music are released & bought in hundreds of thousands of copies, but Ukraine does not seem to be involved in this process of ancient music revival. It would be a great shame if these traditions died completely. Ancient music of Ukraine does not have to be reinvented or “reconstructed”, it’s there, it’s alive, & all it takes is some effort to preserve it.

МенСаунд (ManSound) is a vocal sextet, founded in 1994 featuring: Владимир Сухин (Vladimir Sukhin) – tenor; Юрий Роменский (Yuri Romensky) – tenor; Сергей Харченко (Sergei Kharchenko) – tenor;  Вилен Kilchenko (Vilen Kilchenko) – tenor; Вячеслав Рубель (Vyacheslav Rubel) – baritone; & Рубен Толмачев (Ruben Tolmachev) – bass.

On ManSound's previous release, Slavic Roots, the group sang Russian & Ukrainian folks songs, but here, on If It’s Magic, the Ukrainian sextet delivers a compact (38 minutes) selection of jazz standards & jazzed-up versions of Stevie Wonder tunes, performed with great skill & energy. The singers have a buzzy quality to their voices that they use to their advantage in creating a phenomenal blend. The bass is buoyant & energetic, the rest of the voices transitions seamlessly from smooth string-like parts to brassy horn parts. The solos are all heartfelt & skillful, with some real standout moments (most notably Yuri Romensky's turn on "Stephanie"). There is also a soulful guest appearance from female lead Gaitana on the Stevie Wonder medley. .

Flëur was formed by two forest sprites who share the singing: Олена Войнаровська (Olena Voinarovska) the dreamer & Ольга Пулатова (Olga Pulatova) the passionate, in Odessa, near the Black Sea, in February 2000. This first album is filled with melancholic pop. The instrumentation blends piano, cello, bass, drums, acoustic guitar & flute. Flёur offer up thick slabs of melancholy on a layer of refined lyricism with a taste for beautiful melodies, starkly contrasting music, dark & luminous, joyful & sad at the same time. Flёur’s music is like a touch to the deepest core, as the title 'Prikosnovenie', which means 'soft touch', implies.

On Priskosnovenie, Flёur are: Olena Voinarovska – guitar & vocals; Olga Pulatova – piano & vocals; Alex Kozmidi – electric guitar; Alexander Didyk – contrabass; Catherine Serbin – cello; Julia Ground – flute; Alexandria Kutsenko – didgeridoo & backing vocals; & Alex Tkachevsky – drums & percussion.

Valkenvania

Квітень дурнів

Among the many enchanting places which deservedly attract foreign visitors with a love for picturesque ceremony & colorful folklore, there is one small country which, although relatively unknown, surpasses many others in interest. Isolated until modern times because of its inaccessible position, this country is now served by a regular air-line network, which brings it within reach of all who love unspoiled beauty, the proverbial hospitality of a peasant people, & the charm of medieval customs which still survive despite the march of progress.

Valkenvania ia a small country in Eastern Europe, compromising two great valleys; those of the river Vladir, & its tributary, the Moltus. The rivers meet at Klow, the capital (122,000 inhabitants). These valleys are flanked by wide plateaux covered with forests, & are surrounded by high, snow-capped mountains.

Because of its isolation until very recent time, there is only one band I could find from Valkenvania that had released anything available to the rest of the world.

That band is грязный два взуття (Filthy Duoa Pantofi). The band was formed in 1997 when Елвін епископ (Alvin Episcopul) heard his first cd. He became hooked on рок і обертати (pok 'n' pole). He got together with the only friends he knew who had electricity & they formed грязный два взуття. In a few months they had written enough material for this demo.
