Around Casa Nada del Este lately I've been listening to all things Lil Obeah since I bought Lil Obeah - From Transylvania & Lil Obeah - In Dub. It's so hot to me right now that I so wanted to share with everyone here, but I think everyone should support the artist & buy it yourselves, so I wasn't sure what to do. Just chill & enjoy it myself. But that's not really my style. I love to share what I'm bumpin' or bangin' or groovin’ to at the moment. What to Do?
Then I came across this 2+ hour mixtape from Lil Obeah hisself. I split the tracks & cut it into two parts. It contains numerous tracks from Lil Obeah's latest as well as songs that soothe his ears.
Lil Obeah (Andrei Bucureci) is a curator, musicologist, art director, & entrepreneur. He has been a vital part of various projects such as Tunesinourheads, Abator Industries, Crowd Control, Creionetica, Black Rhino Music, Black Rhino Radio & A4Activism.
Andrei recently began releasing under the moniker Lil Obeah on the Sound of Art to Come label.
The Sound of Art to Come Records is a partnership started by Andrei & Cristiana Bucureci. It is a multi-faceted Transylvanian platform, publishing house, & record label, where dub, electronic & experimental artists from all over the world come together. From the depths of Romania, Andrei & Cristiana offer monthly a unique selection of works of art, collages, music, & remixes inspired by the intersection between Pop Art, multiculturalism, & horror movie soundtracks.
Lil Obeah also hosts a monthly show on Black Rhino Radio called Everyday is Halloween with sessions dedicated to Jamaican music as well as dub, reggae, & bass sounds from all over the world with a dark spooky haunting aesthetic. It may seem unusual but Everyday is Halloween focuses on the sounds that bridge the gap between pop art culture, comic books, horror movies, from both Romanian & Caribbean culture. His programs approximate imaginary Eastern EU pirate radio shows from another dimension.
This Lil Obeah Everyday is Halloween mixtape features exclusive remixes, never-heard-before original songs from the Sound of Art to Come renegade Transylvanian label, & inspirational tunes from great artist of Romania & across the globe. Fantastic selections from all the Sound of Art to Come crew, a fine smattering of Romanian guest artist, & it ends off with Denis Bovell & The Slits. What more can ya ask for in a mixtape?
Note: the tracklist with the Asymetric mp3 is not accurate. After "Le Serpent Qui Danse Dub" it veers awry & good luck figuring what the SNAFU is. I have the original 2:37:25 version if anyone wants to attempt the unravel. What I have done is compile the tracks as they are listed.
Second note: while working on this, a friend dropped by from Pittsburgh & brought my copy of Horace Andy - Midnight Scorchers which I had previously ordered from the nearest record store (90+ miles away) that was going to have it. If you don't know...continuing a series that Adrian Sherwood began with Heavy Rain, his re-working of Lee 'Scratch' Perry's Rainford album, Midnight Scorchers is both the essential sequel to Midnight Rocker as well as being a powerful stand-alone album. So I'm off on a Sherwood 'sound system' Dubplate. But please give this mixtape a listen. Powerful concept & a taste of things Lil Obeah-style for the uninitiated. Hope you enjoy.

not sure why no one is commenting on this, what i will say is that while i have immensely enjoyed the 70s dub you have posted, the modern stuff leaves me cold, why i don't know.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, thanks for taking the time to comment.
DeleteFor years I was exclusively JA 70s Dub, King Tubby to this day is the best that all aspire to be. Then I became aware of On-U Sound & the great things Adrian Sherwood was doing in the UK, taking the elements of Dub & applying them to non-reggae styles. I gradually became aware of the vast world-wide Dub network: Italy, Germany, Japan, practically everywhere.
By that time the twenty-first Century was dawning & Dub was fully digitalized. Many new Dub artists took full advantage of the new innovations in soundscaping to create all new textures in Dub, some tried to duplicate the great 70s style into a digital age, while others were looking for a more "pure" sound of Dub, relying on analog equipment & production to permeate their offerings. I was drawn into the spirit I percieve at the heart of Dub carried out by twenty-first Century Dub adventurers.
Everyone in the Brotherhood of Dub has their own favorite style, era, scientist. That is the universality of the spirit of Dub. Enjoy what you enjoy & praise Jah. I am always looking forward to climbing higher & higher heights in my communion with Dub. The next fresh vibe.
As one last afterthought, I have never really felt the chill of coldness from modern Dub. I always am amazed by the rush of warmth from the new Dub pioneers.
