Ancient Future

Futuro Antico is a pioneering World Music group.  After the demise of the group Aktuala, Walter Maioli teamed up with Riccardo Sinigaglia, a keyboardist & theoretician in musical intonations & Gabin Dabiré, a singer, guitar player, & composer from Burkina Faso. The aim of FA was D'ai Primitivi all'Elettronica, which they released in 1980. On this Opus they recruited a number of musicians from India & Africa for the recording.

The following are three untitled tracks taken from a live show in the early 80s.

Tamburada began in the fall of 2001 in Istanbul as a music union existing in a constant state of change. In 2006 Tamburada had to slow down their forward momentum in order to spread out more, musically. During those five years, the band worked with varied musicians, played numerous gigs in & out of Istanbul. They also recorded this, their one & only Fantastik

On Fantastik, Tamburada are: Özlem Şimşek – vocals; Korhan Futacı - tenor saxophone & backing vocals; Burak Irmak - Hammond organ, Rhodes, & toccata;  Feryin Kaya - electric & fretless bass guitars; Tansu Kaner - electronic effects & samples; Özün Usta – percussion; & Berke Can Özcan - drums, logdrum, & vibraphone.

Ralf just got some new Wild West mash-up & she’s in 7th Heaven™. She loved the original Wild West & now it’s re-released, a two mix mash-up, I kid you not.

I was going to post Pain Teens today but now I’m in the mash-up mood.

Here’s “Tell Laura I Love My Blue Heaven”.

Oh, wait…

This isn’t a mash-up, it’s avant-garde skronk shizzle, fer rizzle.

1st Gen Punk Rawk from Ozone City

Previously I posted up some old-school punk from Texas. One of the things was the Cottage Cheese From the Lips of Death compilation. One of the songs was "Soldiers of a Pure War" by Mydolls.

Mydolls formed around 1978 in Houston, Texas under the creative wings of Dianna Ray & Trish Herrera, soon joined by Linda (Bond) Younger. After several attempts working with various auditioning drummers failed, Trish's cousin George (Jorge) Reyes joined the band.

After the 1981 release of their first 7'' Nova Grows Up, Mydolls went to England, met Mayo Thompson & Red Krayola, hung out at Rough Trade Records, & did a BBC Radio on-air interview with John Peel.

Mydolls appear in the 1984 Wim Wenders' movie Paris, Texas as the band in the bar scene shot in Beaumont, Texas, with Nastassja Kinski & Harry Dean Stanton. The band traveled to New York City to attend the U.S. premiere at the N.Y. Film Festival. They played the after-party at the Danceteria.

They have performed shows with bands such as Minor Threat, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Poison 13, Big Boys, Ragged Bags, The Cramps,  & Stickmen with Rayguns. In 1985, Mydolls played their farewell gig. Recently they have regrouped & play shows & benefits around Houston.

Chance Encounters

Damn, I'm ecstatic to have my turntable back. All I can add to the following is, I performed a Ritual to "Evocation of a Radiant Childhood". It went swimmingly, so…hey, practioners, you might try starting there. Now I'll leave it to a real expert…the artist...Bill Nelson.

According to Sir William hisself:

"The music presented on these two albums marks the consolidation of several years of musickal & philosophical practice. Almost every piece was conceived during moments of intense stillness or 'magickal vacuity'.

For this I acknowledge the influence of the late Austin Osman Spare, whose techniques for creating 'automatic drawing' has found a sympathetic resonance in my own work.

Of all the music I have made, this is, perhaps, the most personal & yet the least demonstrative. Attempting nothing & existing purely for itself, it is, nevertheless, a practical music, ideally suited to the occultist in search of ritual atmosphere or serene meditation.

With such a purpose in mind I offer this work to my fellow initiates as a testament to the Gnosis & a confirmation of The World Within."

What an ASS

Just got my copy of Armand Schaubroeck Steals – God Made the Blues to Kill Me! (#248 / 750) 10″ single. The package includes the 10″ single (Side 1 featuring the “Strat mix” of the title song, Side B the "330 mix" of the title song, both 13:11 minutes long) plus a signed CD with the bonus song "Slip Away", a postcard of the famous 'holding switchblade' photo, & a limited edition ASS God Made the Blues guitar pick.

It is the first release from Armand Schaubroeck Steals in over 30 years. The single is a teaser for the upcoming full length LP.

The title song is a thirteen-minute blues opera about a guy going to & returning from Vietnam.

Rev. Norb sez:
"This is some genius, epic shit…It’s sort of like if …Eugene Chadbourne could have a long, coherent, musical thought, or if the Last Poets were white or if Zoogz Rift got electroshock therapy or something. The ending finds the protagonist opting for 'Needle Park' as opposed to the way of his other contemporaries, who 'eat the shotgun'."

I’m posting up the bonus track "Slip Away" for your listening pleasure. If you like it or already know ASS, then Armand Schaubroeck Steals - God Made The Blues To Kill Me!  10"/CD single ia available for $15.98 plus $6 s/h. Contact ASS at their facebook page or Mirror Records (Armand’s record label he runs out of the basement of his Rochester, NY House of Guitars).

On numerous occasions I’ve featured other of bassist Bill Laswell’s projects here. His efforts range from avant-garde to punk jazz, art rock to industrial hip-hop, Dub to electronica.

Although there is fantastic instrumentation on Hashisheen, this opus centers around the spoken-word stylings, recounting the story of Hassan-i Sabbah, founder of the Hashshashin (Hashshisheen), a legendary group of middle-eastern assassins.

Hashisheen features readings by Iggy Pop, William S. Burroughs, Anne Clark, Hakim Bey, Ira Cohen & others. Guest producers include Jah Wobble, Techno Animal, & Eyeless in Gaza.

Hashisheen is the story of Hassan-i Sabbah & his Hashshashin's journey from Persia to the mountains of Northern Iran, his conquest of the fortress Alamut, his extensive studies & philosophies, his isolation, & eventual death.

Care Package from the Vinyl Bardo

Today was just one of those days.

Yesterday’s rain scrubbed the sky, today was crystal clear & Cali sunny.

I had just returned from Turntables Unlimited

with my turntable all tuned up (cleaned, belt adjusted to perfect rpms, new Audio Technica AT-95e Special Edition cartridge) & took advantage of the sunny weather. I sat out in the back yard & partook of some solar puffing (using only a magnifying glass & star Sol power…no flame…nature’s perfect vaporizer). Shortly after my mid-day meditation session, a package of vinyl arrives on my doorstep. Providence was being ever-so-smiling.

Inside was:
a copy of 1985 Mute Records STUMM 24 Mark Stewart – As the Veneer of Democracy Starts to Fade vinyl that I picked up for a friend (I am, however, going to compare the two copies I now have & keep the best…after all, he hasn’t paid me yet).

1985 Mute 12Mute037 Mark Stewart – Hypnotized 12" single pour moi.

1985 Upside Records UP60005-1 Mark Stewart & Maffia self-titled vinyl, ditto.

1990 Mute STUMM 62 Mark Stewart – Metatron vinyl, ditto.

1988 Enigma Records Bill Nelson – Chance Encounters in the Garden of Lights 2xLP, you get it by now.

& almost lost amongst the 12"  monsters was this succulent little 7" (much love Abraham)…

Side A –
Eros Arriving
Bill Nelson vocals & all instruments except –
Merrick – drums.

Side B –
Haunting in My Head
Bill Nelson – vocals & all instruments except –
Bogdan Wiczling

The single version of "Eros" appears on The Two-fold Aspect of Everything, disc Eaux d'Artifice Side A track 5 (the version of "Haunting" that follows – track 6 – is a remix of this version) & also on The Love That Whirls (Diary of a Thinking Heart) disc Whirl 1 track 5.

I don’t believe the single version of "Haunted" appears anywhere else than this 7". As noted above, the TTfAoE version is a remix & I believe the version added as a bonus track to the 2005 Mercury TLTW(DoaTH) re-release CD is another version or at least the remix remastered???

More later,
