State of Decay Across the USA

Again re-uploaded 6/24/2024 per request. Enjoy!

I dug this out a little while ago & it’s been getting a lotta play aroun’ heeyah.

Great goth-tinged post-punk from Don Diego & Linda LeSabre. They had both been members of Washington D.C. post-punk outfit Grand Mal. After leaving that band, they moved to Los Angeles in 1987 & their four-song EP followed shortly thereafter.

I originally had the four-song Elvis Christ EP which features the first four songs of side two of this LP. Then came The LP. This is the original vinyl release from 1988 on Gymnastic Records, a great goth/industrial label out of Germany. It was also released the following year on vinyl by Flipside Records & as a CD by Little Sister Records. Both 1989 versions are identical but the 1988 version not only has "Drums Along the Mohawk" (which was replaced in the later versions by "Chain of Abuse") but it contains earlier different mixes. The 1989 versions have been remixed, & the sound is more clear, the vocals more to the forefront.

I prefer this original version which is a bit muddier, but is much richer instrumentally. The bass of Don Diego is the lead instrument on all the releases, but on this earlier version there is more use of studio effects, yet it conveys a much more raw sound.

Credits: Don Diego - bass & vocals; Linda LeSabre - drums & vocals; Dave Haas - guitar (B1 - B4); Wrex Mok - guitar & vocals (A1 - A4 & B5); & Danny Frankel - percussion, voodoo shakers & rattles.

Joyous Samhain

This album from Perth, Australia native Abbe May was knocked out in five days with members of Kill Devil Hills, The Lazy Railway & Abbe’s regular band The Rockin' Pneumonia. It is brimming with spectral sexual energy, perfect for knocking up a chilly Samhain eve. Her MySpace page says: “Five days, four musicians, three chords, too many bottles of spliff wine & one Willie Dixon song.” Abbe isn’t worried about evangelical threats of calling Satan into her life by using his name; she’s willing to play with the Big Boy if He’s willing to play with her. Well, are you, Natas, are you?

Hank

UPDATE: This post was re-uploaded 08/10/2013. Enjoy, NØ

This goes out to Salmagundi Syncopation. She posted some Buk on her blog & I’m returning the flavor.

This here masterpiece was recorded in 1966.

It was finally released by Steve Richmond’s Earth Books, 137 Holister Avenue, Santa Monica, CA. in 1977.

The great photos on the front & back covers & inside left & right gatefold are by Lawrence Robbin.

Bukowski is in fine form: drinking; smoking; & wise-cracking throughout the 90 Minutes in Hell.

According to legend, there were supposedly only 500 copies printed. I consider myself lucky to be one of those Fortunate 500.

Hank begins Side 4:
"Well, what’re you gonna do? All right, if you can’t waste tape, you can’t waste anything. If you can’t waste anything, you might as well quit. So, the next move is mine, right? & I’m too loaded to even be decent. All right, let’s try some more just for laughs. (Ho Ho Ho)."

He then follows up with the scathingly brilliant "A Report Upon the Consumption of Myself". Classic Bukowski, talking tough.

Punk Til Ya Poop!

UPDATE: This post was re-uploaded 09/17/2015.  Enjoy, NØ

Following closely on the heels of the notorious compilation Punk Til Ya Puke!...

I got this one from my friend Dirty Mike from Dirty Records in Phoenix. This gem is on another Phoenix DIY label Bad Stain Records, which is run by some friends of Dirty Mike’s. A new entry into the always popular Bad Stain punk compilation line-up, featuring no less than 32 rare & unreleased songs by some of the youngest, funniest punk/hardcore/ska bands from the the last gasps of the 20th Century.

Some of these bands are from the Phoenix area. Others are bands with ties to Dirty Records & Bad Stains in one way or another. Maybe they released stuff on one of their labels, or played gigs or shared floor space in Phoenix. Wherever they’re from, this is an eclectic but fun mix.

Some of the acts you’ll know, like: Less than Jake; or At the Drive In; or Drain Bramaged. Some of the bands are on Dirty Records & have been featured here in the past: No Fraud; Mandingo: or Adam’s Alcoholics. Some of them are obviously into some weird-name thing that must have been going on at the time: The Fonzarellies; The Liverrotchies; The Grubbies; Beezlebullies; or Swookumchuck. Then there are some bands you may not have ever heard that are worth the listen, particularly Against All Odds; Dirty Laundry; & Subject Mad.

Whatever the case, check this sucker out.

Go Fuck Your Music Reviews

During the 1990s resurgence of punk rock & the alternative labels’ ‘feeding frenzy’, I used to get a lot of musick from the DIY, anti-corporate Rot’en Roll Records folks out of East Northport, NY who released 7” records to the fans for a dollar apiece. Negative Reaction, Violent Society, Youth Gone Mad, Bastard Squad & many many more cool as shit bands got their chance to be heard thanks to the Rot’en Roll folks.

Well, here’s a compilation from Stink Box Records out of River Edge, NJ, another DIY outfit, distributed by Rot’en Roll with thirty songs by 12 different bands. They recorded 4000 copies & gave them to the bands for free, to give away or sell for no more than $3. Think about that for a minute. Also, it states that unauthorized copying, hiring, lending, public performance & broadcasting of this record encouraged.

SoFA's Choice

Re-uploaded by request 01/16/2025

Here’s another compilation of San Jose bands, this from Little Lucky (in fact it starts off with Horchata’s “Green Butter” that was on the last Little Lucky post). It is a broad brush-stroke of downtown San Jose bands of that time. This one’s called SoFA’s Choice. A little history. In the second wave of San Jose’s attempted musickal renaissance (the first wave involved The Laundry Works, Scottish Rites Temple, Ribzy, Los Olvidados, Frontier Wives etc.), clubs & bands flourished in the South First Street Area. The area was labeled SoFA, echoing San Francisco’s South of Market SoMA. One of the events moving the scene in the right direction began on Sunday, Sept. 27, 1992, when the first SoFA Street Fair took place on South First Street. The fair flaunted a more Bohemian bent than its downtown mainstream cousins like Tapestry in Talent. It celebrated more alternative culture & musick. The first year was wild, as all the numerous bars & night clubs located along the street were open for free & featured a non-stop roster of the newest local acts. Street vendors, artists, & poets were in abundance. Believe it or not, a lot of the locals hauled out their old beat up sofas & set them up on the sidewalk for seating to relax on & watch the events of the day unfold. But soon the fair evolved from its freewheeling free-for-all beginnings to a more traditional sort of music festival with the addition of gates & fences, admission charges, & hundreds of cops. By the third year, few of the original SoFA denizens even attended & sofas were banned. After 10 years, the SoFA Street Fair died an ugly death. This compilation is named after that area, those events, & the bands that tried to sustain the scene.

Bombs for Whitey

Way back in September of 2007, not long after I started this mess, I posted up two songs from some friends of mine in a band called Bombs for Whitey. They were from San Jose & relocated to Lost Angels about the time I sloughed off to Sacko’tomato. While I was digging through my boxes of clutter recently, I unearthed their self-titled release, so without any further ado than to say all song are by Al Langone (guitarist) & Paul Nevins (vocalist) except for the last cut, a live cover by Pop/Williamson, here they are...

Right Upside Your Head, Sucka!

Been culling through my musick & have been concentrating this last week on bands from my old homestead, San Jose.

Here’s one from San Jose's spastic jazz-improv group Horchata. They got together in 1993 playing informal jam sessions that got out of hand. The core members performed as Sacrilicious before adding horn players & arriving at this line-up: Jim Lopez - vocals; Ona Stewart - vocals & guitar; Jim Carrico - vocals & guitar; Brady Laucher - bass; Dale Means - drums; Reggie Webb - alto saxophone; Jason Walker - tenor saxophone; Rob Lombardi - trumpet; Justin Rivera - trombone; & Steve Delaney - harmonica. The band musick seems to be about Kung-fu, getting baked, & Horchata drinks. They’re also into " weird solos & transitions," says alto saxophonist Reggie Webb. "Instead of jazz to jazz, we'll go from reggae to swing to ska to punk rock. Then we'll have a harmonica solo instead of a guitar solo." Recorded live at Third Street Dojo; produced by Papa Hawk; released on Little Lucky.

While I was pondering all things Parliamentally Funkadelified, thinking 'Good night, Star Child!', I thought of the Maggots that crawled in the Brain of the greatest of all Mothershippers, Maggot Brain  hisself, 'The Haze'. The song "Good Nite Eddie" popped unbid into my mind. I dragged out this ole double cassette I hadn't listened to in quite some time & luxuriated in the heavenly FUNK! of Bootsy's NEW Rubber Band. The lyrical plaint of Eddie's guitar is sweetest nectar to a bruised soul. Hope you all enjoy.

UPDATE

I know I'm a Luddite.

Every so often I go back through all my posts & physically dig out the latest comments.

My life has been in turmoil lately so I haven't checked regularly. Friday I noticed three friends commented on different things on two separate posts.

Anonymous wanted to let me know that the link to Dark Star - Travelogue II was no longer working & Quiscalas wanted to know if I could post Dark Star - Headtrip.

Done & done.

bunchterror let me know that the Pigbag link was down, so I re-upped that & posted two more Pigbag releases as a way of saying thanks. It takes a lot of thought & effort to post good musick. I truly appreciate it when folks take the time to let me know when links are down. I always try to respond with a little extra as well. To those of you who asked & all the rest of you that might care...

Another re-up - kontort let me know about a problem with the LPD file Live at the Metro that was requesting a password. None of the posts here at NSS should require passwords. If they do, please let me know. Thanks kontort.

I think I'm Gonna Throw Up

LINK HAS BEEN UPDATED 23 JUNE 2013

At the time of this release, Pat Maley had run Yoyo Studios in Olympia, Washington for over eight years. His philosophy was that “good bands should be recorded regardless of their ability to pay” because he felt that most bands were at their best when they were new, poor, & still had something to prove. This album is a collection of what he considered to be some of the best recordings he had done at Yoyo.

From 1984 to 1990 Yoyo Studio recorded in a chicken coop & a barn on a ten acre farm in Olympia. In April 1990 they moved to the ABC House basement, then in July 1991 they moved once again to the Capitol Theater in downtown Olympia.

This material was recorded on a half inch eight track multi-track deck, a twelve by eight mixing board, & just enough microphones to record three piece bands properly. It was then mixed down to stereo on a DAT machine.

This copy is on green vinyl with a info insert. It varies from the CD re-release in that there are only 16 tracks here as opposed to 22 on the CD, & the order is different. Both start with Kicking Giant’s “Fuck the Rules” which is appropriate for this compilation.

What's New?

Hello Voyagers.

What a strange bad time the last few weeks have been. Not to bring you down with my shitty life, but...

1) I was arrested & just got out of jail.
2) I lost my job.
3) I’m being evicted from my home.

Awfully fucked up trifecta if you ask me.

original billboard

You probably all are aware of the Billboard liberation movement. Slightly altering the messages of those hideous eyesore advertisements blighting the landscape of Amerika, the Billboard liberation brother/sisterhood try to present a more honest text to the selling of our Nation.

Being the narco-anarchist that I am, I have often myself participated in the above mentioned pastime.

Well, this time I was apprehended in the act & charged with trespassing on private property & commercial(???) vandalism.

altered billboard

While I was sitting in jail waiting to get OR’ed (released on my own recognizance), I was fired from my stupid-ass wage-slave job. No matter how mind numbing or time robbing that grind was, it paid my bills in a paycheck to paycheck, hand to mouth sort of way.

Now that I’m not gainfully (???) employed, I can’t keep up on my rent & am being evicted from my domicile, ye olde Casa de Nada.

So now I’ve got to try & find a job in this troubled economic climate. I've got to try & get some unemployment compensation from this budget strapped State for day to day survival & to possibly afford to move to a new abode before becoming completely homeless. So, I’m trying to rapidly down-size my life.

I am going to be selling most of my vast musick & literary libraries on e-bay, along with many of my musickal instuments & other various crap I’ve accumulated that seem like an Albatross around my neck right now. If anyone is interested, contact me with requests or wants. I don’t have a list of things compiled yet, but if you’re no stranger here, then you probably have had a taste of my musickal leanings & literary wanderings.

Most of all I’m sorry for the long delay in posting up any new musick. Hope you like what I’m offering today & hope you’re life is going better than mine. If it’s not, then you’re really fucked.

Soldier of Love

UPDATE: This post was re-uploaded 01/12/2014. Enjoy, NØ.

Trying to keep up with the latest musick while at the same time finding all the ancient nuggets is kinda hard. I tried to do my part this week-end by buying some new tuneage. Two acts that I always like have new musick out now after quite some time so among others I picked them up & was not at all disappointed. Massive Attack just released their latest Heligoland & I've been waiting since 2003's 100th Window for something new, although lately I've been listening mainly to Collected because it has a great cross-section of their material. I'll post something from it after I've given it a few more listens & figure which song to present.

The other new purchase that I'd really been waiting for was Soldier of Love by Sade. I have a huge crush on Ms. Adu. I should probably feature the title track as it is such a fantastic song with excellent vocals & tremendous guitar, but everyone has been slapping that up (since the single release...cover above). It is my humble opinion that Sade's voice has become increasingly more potent as she has matured & now at times the thought that pops into my mind when I hear her singing is 'the female Leonard Cohen'. I mean that in the most positive of possible ways. After nearly continuous replays, I have decided to honor you all with "The Safest Place". decryption codes in comments
